Paternity And What It Means For The Parties Involved
Paternity cases arise when there is a dispute over rights of a child when the mother and father of that child are not married at the time of the child’s birth. Depending on the circumstance, the mother, alleged father and even the child can initiate a paternity action.
DNA Testing
Scientific DNA tests are typically done for the child, mother and alleged father to establish paternity. If the tests establish a statistical probability of paternity of 95 percent or more, then paternity is established. When paternity is found, the court may order the father to pay child support, attorneys’ fees and cost incident to birth.
